Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser 1977

Toyota Landcruiser 1977
This is my 1977 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser that I purchased in February 2013.
Using 66 Auto Color’s 2K paint, I completely repainted the interior of the vehicle in the Spring of 2013.
The exterior of the vehicle had already been repainted by a previous owner in California, and that paint wasn’t a perfect match to the Toyota paint code 854.
So I shipped a small part of the vehicle down to 66 Auto Color so they could scan it for a dead-on custom mix.  My most recent project last month was to remove the cold-weather grill cover snaps that a previous owner had installed on the front of the hood and grill area.  As you can see, the 66 Auto Color paint matches wonderfully!  The 2K product is great to work with, and the customer service at 66 Auto Color is outstanding!   Plus, I love that they’re in Joplin, so I always  get my order overnight.
Thanks to everyone at 66 Auto Color!

Spray Max paint on a Ford F150 Regatta Blue

Finished painting the hood of my 93 F150 and I'm amazed at how well the color matched the 22 year old paint.  I'm very satisfied with the results from the 2k single stage rattle can!  Attached a few pics (fenders are original paint).

Thanks!

(Note:  We always recommend blending, not panel painting.  However, Derek's project did turn out great.)

FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser Restoration

Advantages of Using Spray Max Aerosols

FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser Restoration

Many times a person may have a project that is more mechanic oriented but needs body work, primer, and paint to finish the project.  Spray Max gives a person the ability to do small repairs, and more, with professional results.

The technology of the Spray Max aerosol can makes this possible:

First, the spray nozzle provides a very fine atomization with a fan pattern like a spray gun.

Second, the 2K aerosol spray can itself has an internal capsule that is ruptured at the time of use.  This provides a professional quality primer, clear coat, and paint that was not available in a spray can before this technology.

Third, 66 Auto Color is one of the few companies that will mix a custom color and put it in the spray can.

The advantages of Spray Max are as follows:

  • Legal in all fifty states
  • No spray booth required
  • Fine atomization provides a wet finish less likely to run
  • Same quality paint that a body shop would use for a long lasting, durable, chemically resistant finish.
  • No mixing ratios, simply shake and shoot the 1K aerosols or, for the 2K, shake, push activator button, shake again, and shoot.
  • No spray gun adjustments or pressure settings to worry about.
  • No clean-up thinner or reducers to buy.
  • And, my favorite part, No Cleanup.
The following pictures are an example from John W. - Aledo, TX.  John's restoration project is a FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser that needed a lot of mechanical work.  Once that was completed he wanted to do some rust repair, but didn't have the spray gun and compressor needed to get it into primer.  He used the Spray Max 2K Epoxy Primer over his body work.  He liked the color of the epoxy primer because it looked similar to an original FJ40 color and the flat patina looked right, so he has decided to keep it in primer.  (Spray Max 2K Epoxy Primer - quantity used 6 aerosols)

Why put all that work into a project and then use some inferior - cheap 1K primer that simply will not give the long term protection that Spray Max 2K epoxy primer will provide?

Tips:  My tips would be to use a good degreaser/wax remover, and to sand and prime until you have a nice smooth surface.  I used a tack cloth and an air can to remove dust.  I stored my paint indoors to keep at a constant temperature.  I used a hair dryer to heat the surface before painting.  It was a cool day, but the paint went on beautifully...no runs or streaks.

66 Auto Color Store made my DIY CT70 Mini Trail replica project look like a professional job!  I've never painted anything beyond a bird house, or an occasional trailer rim.  66 Auto helped with my paint selection, primer and clear coat.  The instructions that accompany the order are easy to understand, and ensure a successful project.

My next project is going to be fixing rust spots on my '73 VW bus.  I have no doubt that 66 Auto Color will make that project a breeze as well.

Bryan -Wymore, NE, Kawasaki KZ400 Motorcycle paint project.
Although I am a handyman, I have never attempted to paint an entire bike.  I now know I will do it over and over again!  I've shown my friends the pictures of the bike and posted it in social media.  Several have asked where I got the paint.  I am already sending customers your way.  Thanks for your product.  This bike was a fade brown.  Now a beautiful Mango Tango Pearl.
I saw a newer Dodge Avenger and loved the color, thinking it would be a great for a motorcycle.  I looked on line for the paint color and was directed toward 66 Auto Color.  I bought two cans of base coat and one can of Spray Max clear.  That was more than enough to complete the bike.  I had a nib after the second base coat and tried to remove it before the coat was dry.  Big mistake.  I learned to let it dry, carefully remove and lightly sand, then apply another coat. I  have seen other people apply clear coat with a traditional spray gun.  When I tested the Spray Max clear I noticed it came out of the can just like a spray gun.  That made application very easy for a beginner.

Prevent Nozzle Clogging & Spitting

What do I do if my spray nozzle is clogging, spitting, or coming out of places it shouldn't?  You probably need to clear your nozzle.  Not keeping your nozzle open could cause several problems: complete failure, coming out  below the nozzle or through any orifice it can find!

Prevent it from happening in the first place by following this simple trick for clean-clear spraying.

Thanks for visiting 66AutoColor.com

When do I spray my second coat of clear coat?

Have you ever asked ," How do I know when my clear coat is ready for the next coat?" A simple test is the touch test.  Touch a piece of tape or paper that has some of the clear coat on it.  It should be tacky, but not stringy.  Do not let your clear coat dry completely.  If it does dry completely, you will need to scuff it and recoat.  Here is a short video that shows the stringing.

1978 Ford Ranger Lariat Paint Restoration - Spray Max Review

Randy E.- Clearmont, WY sent in the following review and information on his Ford Ranger repaint.

Here is what he had to say:
Here are pictures of my truck and the finished paint job (Bahama Blue and Metallic Silver). Thanks for your excellent product.  Randy E.
He added:
Hello-the truck was originally from the factory all the one color Bahama Blue. It had been repainted by some one years ago and it was faded badly. At that time they added a poor shade of a grey or silver for a two tone. It was so faded. I could not quite tell. They also changed the Bahama blue to another sort of purple/navy blue-it too was so faded it was hard to tell. I contacted Kevin Marti at Marti Auto Works and he furnished the original build sheet from the factory (he purchased all the old Ford info which they were going to discard)  This sheet stated the color Bahama Blue with two tone deleted which means all the blue color. Being the purist I am, I wanted to paint the orig. color, but I also thought the metallic silver would go well with the somewhat bright blue. Most Ranger Lariats were orderd with two tone colors anyway, and with the lower racetrack trim already in place I did it. I repaired any rust spots with rust inhibitor after I bared this metal, and used bondo sparingly. It still exhibits some inperfections and small dents and dings, but I am very satisfied, perhaps one day I will afford a complete professional restoration, but it will last for years I believe. I lightly sanded with medium grit then finished with a fine grit paper and also used some scotch brite pads. I was told that it is not necessary to remove orig. paint down to bare metal and it worked for me. I was careful to remove all the scabby clearcoat residue however. I used all but two cans of the 26 (13 blue, 13 silver) I ordered and was able to do three coats with the ordered amount. I feel that I could do it again in a couple of years if need be I think. Thank you sincerely for such a quality, easily applied product. I have received dozens of compliments from friends on Facebook, ford collector forums, etc. and locally, Yours truly Randy E.

PS: I primered any exposed bare metal areas before finish painting, also.

Chopper Motorcycle Transformation (Why I love Spray Max)

Before picture
Here we started with what you see in the picture, a chopper that was painted with a somewhat conflicting design.  We just wanted to update it with the new  House of Kolor Shimrin 2  pearls for a more stealth-like design.  After studying the tank, we decided to keep the flames.  They were back masked, to prepare the rest of the tank for paint.

The steps we took are below:

1.  Wash and clean the tank.
2.  Used Spray Max Wax and Grease Remover and wiped dry with a lint free towel.
3.  Lightly sanded with 400 grit being careful to not break through the clear.  The old paint was still in good condition, so it wasn't necessary to take it all down.
4.  Masked off the flames.
5.  Used the wax and grease remover again and a tack cloth and it is ready to spray.
6.  Using the Spray Max 1K base coat, we painted two coats base coat black, waiting about 10 minutes between coats (When you set the can down for an extended time be sure to turn the can upside down and clear the nozzle each time. This prevents clogging and spitting).
7.  After 10 minutes we were ready to paint the House of Kolor Shimrin 2 charcoal pearl - color number 0047V.  We sprayed three coats of the pearl.  This was also in the Spray Max Aerosol 1K Base Coat.
8.  After drying for 10 minutes we used a tack cloth on the color in preparation for the clear coat. This helps pick up any loose dry pearl.
9.  Waiting 30-40 minutes we were ready to spray the Spray Max Glamour Clear Coat.
10.  We activated the clear coat cans with the button on the bottom of the 2K can, shook the cans about 5 minutes, and after spraying the first light coat, we turned the can upside down to clear the nozzle between coats (one of the most important steps in using the 2K product).
11.  We tested the clear coat between coats by putting our thumb on a wet spot on a masked off area to see if it was ready to spray.  If it is still stringy it is not ready; it should just be tacky and leave an imprint.
12.  We applied three more full wet coats. We stopped there, but you could wait until the clear was completely dry, block sand, and re-clear until the flames are completely leveled out in clear.
13.  Final picture is without color sanding and buffing.

Spray Max Motorcycle Color Change

I used the Spray Max 2K Single Stage Automotive Paint. I used exactly two cans to do the Motorcycle gas tank, front and rear fenders and the two side panels. The color was dead-on, exactly what I wanted. I did use an automotive primer before I painted. The paint coverage was excellent, with very little over spray. I did, as suggested, use several light coats. I also did some wet sanding after the first coat. The only automotive painting I have done has been really small touch-ups. I would recommend this product to beginners or seasoned pros. It is very easy to use, as with any paint you just need to patient.  This would definitely rate as an EXCELLENT product!
